3 THINGS I LEARNED IN L.A TRAFFIC
A few years back I was in LA with some of my leadership school students doing work with the LA Dream Centre. at the The drive there from the airport was a trip. Here’s 3 things I learned driving in L.A:
1. Acting on impulse and damage go hand in hand.
In L.A you find paradox everywhere. Huge mansions and homeless for example. On the road: incredibly sweet rides with west coast rims, and rolling rust traps with west coast rims. Virtually 1 out of every 4-5 cars seemed to have severe damage. The traffic is nuts and their driving is worse. If you want to bring damage to your car (or your life), just be oblivious to people around you. Can you say blind spot?
2. Know where you’re going because turning around can be tough.
Being more of a driver than a navigator, I gave the maps to my most skilled navigator – Scott DeVries. Ok let’s be real – I’m brutal with directions. Brutal. One day Scott put the map away just to see how I’d do. The only reason we got there was because the Dream Centre was on a high hill and I could see it. Another day we were stopping for food and I nearly missed the turn. I did something similar to what you’d see in the Italian job – only in a mini van. Had I missed the turn, 4 lanes of traffic going the other way would have made things pretty tough to correct. Make sure the people around you are going where you want to be going, because if they aren’t, you’re going to need some evasive maneuvers to get back on track. Show me your friends and I’ll show you your future.
3. Mini Vans are boring to drive yet extremely functional.
That’s all.
