My shriveled leg
While playing football in high school, I suffered severe tears to both the ACL and MCL ligaments in my right knee. I was placed in a full leg splint and bed ridden for two weeks until surgery.
The splint did not allow any movement whatsoever. When the time came to take the splint off, my leg was completely shriveled. My muscles went into atrophy because what was protecting me from future injury also deteriorated my muscle. To this day, my calves are not the same size. Every time I look at my legs I am reminded:
Use it or lose it.
Over exertion leads to burnout, and under-use leads to atrophy. Healthy, productive, and enjoyable relationships and careers are the product of a healthy balance between the exertion of energy and the recovery needed for renewal: spirit, soul and body.
